Why Do They Make Applying For New Jobs So Stressful?

I've just spent the best part of a afternoon applying for one job. I cannot keep working part-time in a pub - I need a more stable job and I found a advert for a job that didn't need specific requirements but it required you to write about your competency between 300 and 500 words and then to do both a numerical and vocabulary test!

I felt like I was back in school again - all I'll be doing is answering phone calls and talking to people I wont need to do any maths and I can speak English - I wrote out my entire application in the language why do you need a vocabulary test too?

This is probably one of the reasons why people don't go looking for jobs - they don't want to spend all day applying for them.
